Americans have always believed in education but in a special American way. The schools’ first job was to turn millions of foreign children into Americans. Since they came from dozens of different countries, that’s not easy. Schools had to teach the children to speak English, to love their new country and to learn how to live in it. American schools were the “melting pot” in which the differences were forgotten. They were the ladder which the poor could climb to a better life. Getting started on a successful career was the main aim.

There is no national curriculum in the USA. Each state has its own system of schools. But there are some common features in the organization of school education in the country.

Compulsory education begins at the age of 6 in most states and continues usually until 16. School consists of 12 grades: 6 years of elementary school and 6 years of high school, but this plan may be different in different states. Children move on to high school in the 7th grade and study there until the 12th grade. There are elective subjects, and every student can choose the ones which he thinks will be necessary for him in his future work or further education.

The state schools are called public schools, besides there are private schools, which are very expensive, and religious schools which are also fee-paying.

There are no national exams, although schools and some states have their own exams.

Extracurricular activity (such as playing for one of the school’s sports teams) is also very important in the American School system and is taken into account by colleges and universities.

When young people finish secondary school they go on to community colleges, which provide two years of higher education at minimal cost. A number of young people go to colleges and universities that provide four years of higher education necessary to receive a bachelor’s degree, as well as additional education for a master’s degree.

Generally, the system of higher education includes 4 categories of institutions.

Any of these institutions may be either public or private. The public institutions are financed by state. Among the private universities the most famous is Harvard.

Let's repeat a rule- Давайте повторимо правило:

To speak about possible situations in different periods you should use Conditionals.

  

There are three types of Conditionals.

 

In each sentence there are 2 parts: the if-clause and the main-clause.

  

Type 1 Conditionals.

This type describes a real or very probable situation in the present or future.
Use these structures:

1. If + Present Simple, Future Simple ( will + V1)

If Kate works hard, she will get a high salary.

 

2. If + Present Simple, Present Simple

Water turns into ice, when the temperature falls below 0.

 

3. If + Present Simple,  Imperative

If you don’t understand, read again the material.

4. If + Present Simple,  can/must/may + bare infinitive

If you go to London, you can see famous statues.

The topic of our lesson is People and Relationship. We have a Grammar Lesson.

На цьому уроці англійської мови  ми розглянемо конструкцію Used to, яка вживається в минулому часі і не має нічого спільного з дієсловом use — використовувати, який в минулому часі також має форму used.

Конструкція USED TO

Правила

Конструкція Used to описує регулярні дії або стану у минулому і перекладається «колись, бувало, раніше».

Конструкція Used to використовується тільки минулого часу (Past Simple Tense), після неї використовується інфінітив дієслова з часткою to.

Дана конструкція вживається, коли мовець хоче показати, що дія-інфінітив в теперішньому часі  вже не відбувається.

ПРИКЛАД: I used to go swimming a lot. — Я раніше багато плавав (а зараз ні).

Негативні і питальні речення з конструкцією used to будуються так, як в минулому часі Past Simple Tense.

Past Simple 

Past Simple використовується для вираження нетривалих дій, коли відомий неточний час у минулому, в який ця дія відбувалася. Навіть якщо мовець й не зазначив певний час, то він (цей час) все одно мається на увазі. 

• She worked abroad 2 years ago. – Вона працювала за кордоном два роки тому.
• Harry wrote a lot of letters in 2011. – Гаррі написав багато листів в 2011 році.
• I met my old friend yesterday. – Вчора я зустрів свого старого друга.

Past Simple використовується для вираження дій, що завершилися в минулому та не мають відношення (видимих результатів) у теперішньому. Така дія могла буди одноразовою, повторюваною, нетривалою, або ж навпаки могла тривати певний проміжок часу, але її тривалість неважлива.

• He was a famous singer. – Він був відомим співаком. (Він більше не співає)
• This man once won a medal. – Цей чоловік одного разу виграв медаль.

• Past Simple вживається для перерахування декількох дій у минулому, що відбувалися послідовно, одна за одною.

  • She entered the room and screamed. – Вона зайшла до кімнати та закричала.
  • I woke up, washed my face and brushed my teeth. – Я прокинувся, умився та почистив зуби.
  • Past Simple використовується, якщо на питання «коли це сталося?» можна дати чітку, але неточну відповідь про час дії. 
  • Слова маркери:
  • yesterday – вчора
  • the day before yesterday – позавчора
  • just now – тільки-но
  • the other day – на днях
  • last week – минулого тижня
  • last month – минулого місяця
  • last year – минулого року, в минулому році
  • last decade – минулого десятиріччя

  • an hour ago – годину тому назад
  • three hours ago – три години назад
  • two weeks ago – два тижня назад

Past Continuous використовується для вираження дій, що відбувалися в конкретний, точно відомий момент або проміжок часу в минулому.

• Yesterday at 10 p.m. I was climbing the tree. – Вчора о 10-й вечора я вилазила на дерево.
• At 5 o’clock yesterday evening my sister was flying from Sydney. – Вчора о 5-й моя сестра летіла з Сіднея.
• At the same time two years ago we were visiting my parents. – В цей же час два роки тому ми провідували моїх батьків.
• She was still dancing at midnight. – О півночі вона все ще танцювала.
• Last night at 1 a.m. I was preparing my speech. – Минулої ночі о першій годині я готував свою промову.

Точний момент часу в Past Continuous може уточнюватися або перериватися іншою короткочасною дією, вираженою в Past Simple.

• She was cleaning the house when the phone rang. – В той час, коли вона прибиралася в домі, задзвонив телефон.
• John was cooking dinner when he suddenly cut his finger. – Коли Джон готував обід, він раптово порізав собі палець.
• Helen was using the blender so she didn’t hear you came in. – Хелен користувалася блендером, тому вона не чула, як ти увійшов. 

Слова while («в той час, як», «поки») та when («коли») підкреслюють та використовуються з різними частинами складнопідрядного речення. Як правило, після слова while вживається Past Continuous, а після when вживається Past Simple.

• While I was typing my report everyone left the office. – Поки я друкувала свій звіт, всі залишили офіс.
• While I was eating my soup, he came home. – В той час, коли я їв суп, він прийшов додому.

• I was eating my soup when he came home. – Я їв суп, коли він прийшов додому.
• When Dana broke the cup I was making some cakes. – Коли Дана розбила чашку, я готувала тістечка.

Одночасні дії у минулому

Past Continuous використовується для вираження в одному реченні декількох дій, що відбувалися одночасно в минулому.

• She was doing her makeup while she was talking over the telephone. – Вона робила макіяж в той час, коли розмовляла по телефону.
• They were drinking a cup of coffee while they were sitting at that restaurant. – Вони пили каву, поки сиділи в тому ресторані.
• We were eating delicious pasta while we were watching a new cartoon. – Ми їли смачну пасту, коли дивилися новий мультик.
• I was playing the guitar and Jane was playing along the drum. – Я грала на гітарі, а Джейн пригравала мені на барабані.

Слова маркери: at that moment – в той момент at the same time – в цей же час (у минулому) while – в той час, як; поки when – коли as – так як all morning / the whole morning – протягом всього ранку, весь ранок all night (long) / the whole night – протягом всієї ночі, всю ніч all evening / the whole evening – протягом всього вечора, весь вечір all day (long) / the whole day – протягом всього дня, весь день Past Perfect  Past Perfect використовується для вираження дії, яка передує іншій дії у минулому або ж відбувалася до певного моменту в минулому. She told you she had met your mother. – Вона сказала тобі, що зустріла твою мати. (Вона спочатку зустріла мати, а потім через деякий час розповіла про це) They had finished their work by 6 p.m. – Вони закінчили роботу до 6-ї вечора. Tom had drunk a cup of coffee before going to work. – Том випив чашку кафи перед тим, як піти на роботу.

Видимий результат у минулому

Past Perfect використовується для вираження дій, що завершилися в минулому й результат цих дій був також спостерігався у минулому. She was upset. She had torn her favorite dress. – Вона була засмучена. Вона розірвала свою улюблену сукню.

Past Simple 

Past Simple використовується для вираження нетривалих дій, коли відомий неточний час у минулому, в який ця дія відбувалася. Навіть якщо мовець й не зазначив певний час, то він (цей час) все одно мається на увазі.

Oxford

There are about 90 Universities in Great Britain, the biggest one is London University. The oldest is Oxford University.

Oxford was founded in the 12th century as an aristocratic University.

The cost of studies in the university is rather high. Students have to pay for using libraries and laboratories, as for taking exams.

The university is a collection of 35 colleges: two for women only, the rest are for man and women. There 16 faculties there. Each college is a completely autonomous body, are governed by its own laws. The largest college has over 500 students, the smallest – 100 students.

The academic year has three terms, each lasts from eight to ten weeks. The students have three exams: in autumn, in spring, in summer. Final exams take place at the end of the course of studies. If a student fails the exam, he may take it again. Only two re – examinations are allowed.

Within the first week the freshman meets his tutor who tells the student about his plans, the lectures which he must take, about the requirements for the examination which he will take, about the course of reading for him. Attendance at lectures is not compulsory. Once every week each undergraduate goes to his tutor’s room to read out an essay which he has written and discuss this essay with the tutor. At the beginning or end of each term the progress of the students is tested by the college examinations.

They pay great attention to athletics at the University. The students are engaged in different kinds of sports, take part in competitions between Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

The doors of Oxford University are not open to all. The majority of the students are graduates of private schools, so Oxford University remains an aristocratic university to the present day.

Are you hungry at one o’clock? The Diner has hot-dogs, pizzas, salads, ice-creams, fruit — all your favorite food for lunch, and as much as you can eat!

It’s video time after lunch. Or would you like to play computer games in the computer room? And our instructors can help you write your own programmes on one of the twenty ‘Apple’ computers there. Or do you want to read your book quietly in the garden? You can do that, too.

What else? You can ride a horse, ride or a bike, or rollerskate, or climb the mountains near the lake! Again, the instructors are ready. Let’s go! Or do you want to do some cooking in the ‘Cookhouse’? You can make your own cakes there!

In the evening there’s a barbecue at the lake or dinner in the Diner. There’s singing round the fire and dancing at the Lake Powell disco. Or would you like to play a quiet game of chess? Choose anything …

Now, a rich man who had a beautiful daughter once said: „The young man, who will go to the lake in the evening and stay in the cold water till morning, will have my daughter for his wife.”

There lived a poor young man who loved the rich man’s daughter very much. He said to his mother, „I shall try to stay all night in the lake and then marry my dear girl”.

„No, no”, the mother said, „you are my only son!”. The water in the lake is very cold, and the animals will eat you up. Don’t go there!” She cried and cried, but her son said: „Mother, don’t cry, I must try. I love her so much!”

So the young man went to the girl’s father. He told him that he wanted to go to the lake and stay in the cold water all night. The rich man sent his servants to the place where they could watch the young man.

When night carne, the young man went to the lake and his mother followed him, but he didn’t see her. There was a hill forty paces away from the place where the young man went into the water. The woman climbed up the hill and made up a fire there. The wild animals saw the fire and were afraid to go near that place.

The young man saw the fire too. He understood that his mother was there. He thought of his mother’s love, and it was easier for him to stay all night in the very cold water.

Morning came. The young man went to the rich man’s house. The rich man saw him and said, „My servants say that there was a fire on the hill forty paces from the lake. It warmed you and that is why you could stay all night in the water. So you can’t marry my daughter. Good-bye”.

The   young   man   was    very    angry.   He went to the judge.  “Well”,

the judge said, „this is a very simple case”.

The next morning the young man with his mother and the rich man with his servants came before the judge. There were many people there who wanted to hear the case.

 

The judge asked for a pot of cold water. Then he walked forty paces from the pot and made a fire. „Now”, he said, „we shall wait a little until the water is warm”. The people cried: „But the fire is so far away, it can’t warm the water in the pot”. Then the judge said: „How could that young man warm himself at a fire forty paces away?”

So the case was over, and the young man married the rich man’s daughter. They lived happily for many years.

When coming to a new country, is it very useful to know special features of its dwellers` character in advance. This knowledge will surely help to avoid confusing situations and to establish good relations with everyone. We all know that Italians are open and emotional, Norwegians are calm and strong-willed, Germans are practical and serious… And what about Ukrainians?

Ukrainians are courageous and freedom-loving

Ukrainians are famous for being real bravehearts from the times of Cossacks. The Cossack warriors were always ready to defend freedom of their homeland till death. Nowadays, it is easy to notice that the blood of brave Cossacks still runs in Ukrainians` veins. During Ukrainian Revolution of Dignity (2013-2014), Ukrainian people showed that they have no fear when standing together protecting their rights from any enemy. Nowadays, braveness and sense of justice of Ukrainians is reflected in numerous social initiatives, volunteer activities and demonstrations. When something is endangering rights and freedoms, Ukrainians immediately join their forces and respond.

Ukrainians are hospitable hosts

If you are invited to a Ukrainian home, you are a lucky person. Ukrainians are well-known for being perfect hosts. The guests are usually invited to a table full of tasty drinks and foods, including traditional Ukrainian meals such as delicious borsch and varenyky. Be ready for a long friendly talk: Ukrainians like to tell stories as well as listen to them, exchange experiences and tell funny jokes. They are interested to know more about any new person they meet, so you will be probably asked about your life and your home country. Just relax, have a good drink with your new friends from Ukraine and enjoy famous Ukrainian hospitality.

Ukrainians are suspicious to strangers at first, but become your great friends when they know you better

Don’t get upset if you notice that people in Ukraine don’t smile to you right away and look at you suspiciously. They do not think anything bad about you – this is just their typical attitude to strangers. When you start to communicate and Ukrainians see that you are a nice and trustable person, they will become your best friends! After “breaking the ice”, you will find out that Ukrainians smile a lot, like to have conversations and are always ready to help. Those who were looking awry at you, will suddenly turn into open, emotional and kind people.

Ukrainians are humorous and love to hang out

Partying is in the list of those things which Ukrainians can do the best of all. Ukrainian people can party all night long, sometimes even in the middle of the week. If you walk down the center of a big Ukrainian city at night, you will surely see a lot of open pubs and clubs as well as many people having fun outside. Besides that, Ukrainians have great sense of humor, so you will never feel bored with them. If you are looking for a good party and funny jokes, Ukraine is the right choice for you.

Ukrainians are vivid and a bit chaotic

Ability to make a clear plan, calmness and practical thinking are the things, which Ukrainians seem to lack sometimes. In this aspect, they can be compared to Italians or Latin Americans. Ukrainians are vivid, lively, emotional and spontaneous, but chaotic at the same time. They can start doing something but never finish it, or finish in a way, which was never expected. This feature sometimes can be a little annoying, especially for those who are used to well-ordered life. In general, Ukrainians are smart, but should learn to be more organized.
Remember these specifics of national character of Ukrainians, and you will find your best friends in Ukraine!

Ukraine is a country with the glorious past. It is rich in historical monuments and different places of interest. Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine and .....1. It has already celebrated its 1500th anniversary. That's why it is not surprising that a lot of interesting monuments are situated there, for example, .....2. It is breathtaking to wander along the streets of the old town, .......3.

But Ukrainian places of interest are situated not only in Kyiv. Near the small town of Kanev the monument to the Ukrainian ........4 is situated. The museum, where the books, drawings and manuscripts of Shevchenko are kept, is situated in the village not far from Kanev. Even the house, where he was born, is preserved. Read the text and do the task.

Jamaican-born DJ KoolHerc moves to New York in the late 60’s and brings Jamaican tradition of «kindling» with him. It included a story consisting of rhymes which were created while singing without any preparation. He used turntables for mixing two tracks to create a new sound. He used to speak from the stage such things as «Throw your hands in the air. And wave’em like ya just don’t care!» Such manner to perform became known as «rapping» then.

Grand Wizard Theodore was the first DJ who used scratching. He invented it by chance. Practising in DJ’s art he turned on music too loudly. When his mother began shouting he slowed down the record by moving a vinyl record back and forth with the hand while it is playing on a turntable that created incredible effect. He was awarded International Turntable Foundation Prize for creating scratching.

While scratching is most commonly associated with hip hop music, since the 1990s, it has been used in some styles of pop and new metal. Within hip hop culture, scratching is one of the measures of a DJ’s skills, and there are many scratching competitions. In recorded hip-hop songs, scratched hooks often use portions of different rap songs.

Read the text and do the task.

Jamaican-born DJ KoolHerc moves to New York in the late 60’s and brings Jamaican tradition of «kindling» with him. It included a story consisting of rhymes which were created while singing without any preparation. He used turntables for mixing two tracks to create a new sound. He used to speak from the stage such things as «Throw your hands in the air. And wave’em like ya just don’t care!» Such manner to perform became known as «rapping» then.

Grand Wizard Theodore was the first DJ who used scratching. He invented it by chance. Practising in DJ’s art he turned on music too loudly. When his mother began shouting he slowed down the record by moving a vinyl record back and forth with the hand while it is playing on a turntable that created incredible effect. He was awarded International Turntable Foundation Prize for creating scratching.

While scratching is most commonly associated with hip hop music, since the 1990s, it has been used in some styles of pop and new metal. Within hip hop culture, scratching is one of the measures of a DJ’s skills, and there are many scratching competitions. In recorded hip-hop songs, scratched hooks often use portions of different rap songs.
